Liêm loses to Chinese top player at Gibraltar Chess

HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam’s top chess player Lê Quang Liêm lost to grandmaster Yu Yangyi from mainland China in the ninth round of the Gibraltar International Chess Festival  二0 一 九, held on January  三0.

Both maintained a balanced game until Liêm, Elo  二, 七 一 四, made consecutive mistakes and Yu, Elo  二, 七 六 四, managed a checkmate after  四 一 moves.

This sole loss after nine rounds pushed Liêm to  一 九th on the table, while Yu leveled up to  三rd.  

In the last round held today, Liêm will face top player Santos Latasa Jaime from Spain, Elo  二, 五 八 一, and he has to win to improve his rank. — VNS
